CVSWMD

Orange is a member of Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District (CVSWMD), which provides programs and services to 19 member municipalities related to proper management of solid waste. CVSWMD does not operate trash hauling services, but it does license waste haulers and hold special collection events, and provides information about how to find a trash hauler or transfer station on its website, www.cvswmd.org.

Facts on Dumping, throwing, and burning refuse:

(a)(1) Prohibition. Every person shall be responsible for proper disposal of his or her own solid waste. A person shall not throw, dump, deposit, cause, or permit to be thrown, dumped, or deposited any solid waste as defined in 10 V.S.A. § 6602, refuse of whatever nature, or any noxious thing in or on lands or waters of the State outside a solid waste management facility certified by the Agency of Natural Resources. Facts on trash burning:

  • The trash burning law has provisions for a penalty of up to $500 and/or performing community roadside cleanup by the violator. If the penalty is not paid, violators will lose their driving license for ten days and their hunting and/or fishing licenses for a period of one year.
  • Trash burning, including backyard burning, refers to the burning of household trash. Trash burning includes treated wood, plastics, newspapers, electronic products, garbage, cardboard, fabrics, tires, and the like — essentially any materials that would otherwise be recycled or sent to a landfill.
  • Burning household trash is illegal in Vermont.
