Orange is a member of Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District (CVSWMD), which provides programs and services related to the proper management and disposal of solid waste (e.g. recycling, household hazardous waste, and food scraps).
CVSWMD’s new Eco Depot operates as a year-round hazardous waste collection facility. Special recycling (e.g. electronic waste, batteries, mercury-containing bulbs & paint) is also accepted, along with other materials, like filmy plastic, used clothing, paper to shred, smoke detectors, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, scrap metal, and appliances (large and small)

Facts on Dumping, throwing, and burning refuse:
(a)(1) Prohibition. Every person shall be responsible for proper disposal of his or her own solid waste. A person shall not throw, dump, deposit, cause, or permit to be thrown, dumped, or deposited any solid waste as defined in 10 V.S.A. § 6602, refuse of whatever nature, or any noxious thing in or on lands or waters of the State outside a solid waste management facility certified by the Agency of Natural Resources. Facts on trash burning:
- The trash burning law has provisions for a penalty of up to $500 and/or performing community roadside cleanup by the violator. If the penalty is not paid, violators will lose their driving license for ten days and their hunting and/or fishing licenses for a period of one year.
- Trash burning, including backyard burning, refers to the burning of household trash. Trash burning includes treated wood, plastics, newspapers, electronic products, garbage, cardboard, fabrics, tires, and the like — essentially any materials that would otherwise be recycled or sent to a landfill.
- Burning household trash is illegal in Vermont.
